INCDMRR Bucharest evolution is characterized by a continuous development of the competence in the field of rare metals and mineral resources exploitation.

The emphasize was always on the development of the best solutions concerning the mineral resources extraction and processing to recover the raw materials and to obtain the maximum economic benefits taking into account the environment protection.

Milestones

1961 – 1965

The first Romanian technological researches concerning the uranium ore processing were performed between 1961 and 1965 by a lab team consisting in experienced scholars from SovRom Quartit.

1966

On March1966 the research concerning uranium’s capitalization becomes an organized activity under the administration of Section 5 from the Geological Expedition Enterprise of General Directorate for Rare Metals from the Mines Ministry.

Section 5 was endowed with a new headquarter specially built in Măgurele (Ilfov), on Physics Institute.

The main objectives of that section were established depending on the national nuclear-electric policy and were consisted in:

  • the elaboration of indigenous uranium ores processing technologies and of technical purification of uranium concentrates required for nuclear fuel fabrication, raw material necessary for the nuclear power facility, which was about to be built in Romania,
  • staff’s training and qualification to perform the research and production activities in the uranium ore processing field.

1970

On 1970 the CANDU type reactor, which uses natural uranium, was chosen for the Nuclear Power Plant Cernavodă.

Section 5 was transformed into the Technological Research Section for Radioactive Metals (SCTMR) from Association for Rare Metals from Bucharest.

The section’s technological research activity was limited to the fabrication of technical uranium concentrates. The thematic of uranium dioxide purification and fabrication was later taken by the Institute for Electric Nuclear Reactors from Colibași, Pitești. In the same time SCTMR’s research field was enlarged on the zirconium and titanium concentrates production, which are used as raw materials for the nuclear reactors infrastructure elements.

1973 – 1974

On 1973 the Association for Rare metals was reorganized and became Enterprise for Rare Metals (IMR), which took over SCTMR on 1974.

On 1974 the Design Section of IPROMIN Bucharest was unified with the Research Section on reorganization occasion. On that moment, the research and design were decentralized by the foundation of specialized institutes in the main mining sites in Romania. So that, the medical research point from Ștei (Bihor) was transferred to a new research – design unit as Laboratory for Radiation Hygiene and Labor Protection, respectively within the Research and Design for Rare Metals (CCPMR), under the coordination of Research and Design Institute for Ores and Non-Ferrous Metallurgy de la Baia Mare (Maramureș), besides the Technological Research Section from Măgurele and the Research Section from Bucharest.

In the same timescale, the uranium processing facility from Feldioara (Brașov) has started to work. CCPRM provided the technical assistance concerning the designed parameters’ achievement by an experts’ team form the former USSR. This facility was built upon the technology elaborated by the research and design experts of CCPMR.

On the same time, the design and setup of the industrial facility for the heavy ores of zirconium and titanium capitalization from the alluvial sands and the sand deposits from Chituc (Constanța), on the Black Sea shore.

1983

On 1983 the Research and Design Centre for Rare Metals (CCPMR) has returned to the Enterprise for Rare Metals (IMR), except that this time was under the coordination of the Internal Affairs Ministry, when it was reorganized and has become The Research, Technological Engineering and Design Centre for Rare and Radioactive Metals Bucharest (CCITPMRR), name under which the institute has worked until 1990. During this time the technological research field was extended to the exploration of ore deposits containing radioactive metals, titanium, zirconium and the in situ research of waste heaps and residual radioactive waters resulted from ore processing, radioprotection and environment protection, standardization analytical methods, etc. was grounded.

1990 – 2003

On 1990 the Enterprise for Rare Metals (IMR) was restructured and has become the Industrial Centre for Rare Metals, later, on 1991 has turned to the Autonomous Authority for Rare Metals and on 1998 on the National Company of Uranium, respectively. The Research, Technological Engineering and Design Centre for Rare and Radioactive Metals Bucharest (CCITPMRR) has kept its field of activity but has become the Commercial Society Research and Design Institute for Rare and Radioactive Metals Joint Venture (ICPMRR).

2003 – prezent

On May 2003, according to the Governmental Decision HG no. 537, the Commercial Society Research and Design Institute for Rare and Radioactive Metals Joint Venture (ICPMRR) has become Research and Development National Institute for Metals and Radioactive Resources (INCDMRR) – ICPMRR Bucharest, which has as activity field the scientific research as well as the technological development engineering of metals and radioactive resources. INCDMRR’s goal is the participation to the elaboration of the development strategy of the main activity and the achievement of all scientific and technological objectives established by the Research, Development and Innovation National Programs, the development of counseling and engineering activities in order to solve the issues in the field of uranium resources capitalization and other rare and radioactive metals processing.
